Weaving the Web of Fate and Destiny
Welcome to The Wyrd. We explore this ancient concept of fate and destiny, in particular its relevance to modern self-discovery and self-improvement. We value the threads that connect Western dialog, history, language, mythology, and personal enlightenment.
What is Wyrd? It’s Not the Fate You Think
In Anglo-Saxon culture, Wyrd is a concept people often translate as “fate” or “personal destiny.” However, it differs fundamentally from the inescapable doom of classical Greek tragedy.

Wyrd is a happening, an event, or an occurrence. It isn’t an end-point; instead, it is a process continually unfolding around us. The word itself derives from the Old English verb weorþan, meaning “to become.” Wyrd literally means “that which has turned” or “that which has become.” Crucially, it embodies the idea that everything perpetually evolves. It draws from its origins while moving toward something new.
Your Wyrd and my Wyrd are separate, yet constantly intertwined. Ultimately, they form the greater pattern of existence. Our blog seeks to observe, evaluate, and understand all that happens around us. We call this process Weaving the Wyrd to further our collective and individual journeys of self-discovery and improvement.
The Web of Wyrd: Symbolism in Action
The underlying concept of this reality is the Web of Wyrd, a complex dimension that holds everything together across all space and time. As an example, people often depict it as nine interconnected lines. This simple structure forms the building blocks of the universe itself.

The Web represents the connections of everything, everywhere, all at once. Thus we’ll explore the tangled threads within this web in all its forms here in this blog, seeking coherence, understanding, and new perspectives for self-enlightenment.

“The threads of wyrd are a dimension of ourselves that we cannot grasp with words. We spin webs of words, yet wyrd slips through like the wind. The secrets of wyrd do not lie in our word-hoards, but are locked in the soul. We can only discern the shadows of reality with our words, whereas our souls are capable of encountering the realities of wyrd directly. This is why wyrd is accessible to the sorcerer: the sorcerer sees with his soul, not with eyes blinkered by the shape of words. Do not live your life searching around for answers in your word-hoard. You will find only words to rationalize your experience. Allow yourself to open to wyrd and it will cleanse, renew, change, and develop your casket of reason. Your word-hoard should serve your experience, not the reverse.”
Brian Bates, in The Way of the Wyrd : Tales of an Anglo-Saxon Sorcerer (1983)
As scholar Brian Bates writes, the Wyrd sisters who spin this web don’t determine our destiny; rather they express the will of Wyrd. We do the same.
The Poetic Ties of Three Words: Wyrd, Weird, and Word
This exploration of destiny becomes all the more symbolic because of the fascinating etymological relationship between three words: Wyrd, Weird, and Word. This relationship is a tangible expression of the very web we seek to understand.
| Term | Origin & Meaning | Connection to Wyrd |
| Wyrd | From Old English wyrd (“fate”); related to weorþan (“to become”). | “That which has become.” It is the continuous process of fate. |
| Weird | Derived from Old English wyrd. Shakespeare borrowed it to name the Weird Sisters (the Norns), reintroducing it to English. | Its modern sense of “strange” or “abnormal” arose from a reinterpretation of its original meaning: fate-determining. |
| Word | Variant of the Old English weorþan (“to become”). | A thread of becoming. It demonstrates how language itself is woven from the same root of Wyrd. |
What’s in a Pen Name? Wyrdis
We value our privacy in this endeavor. Our pen name, Wyrdis, is a new word. Specifically, we forged it by combining two powerful elements from Germanic tradition:
- Wyrd: The concept of fate and becoming.
- Idis: In Germanic mythology, an idis is a divine female being. It is cognate with the Old English ides, meaning ‘well-respected and dignified woman.’ People also theorize that the idisi connect to the North Germanic dísir—female beings associated with fate.
Wyrdis is our alias as an anonymous weaver of the Wyrd. This figure connects the threads of destiny with dignity and self-discovery.
